Kayaking down the Sella: the great adventure of Arriondas

If one plan defines Arriondas, it's kayaking down the river Sella. It's around 15 kilometres of gentle river between Arriondas and Ribadesella, surrounded by forest and mountains, and best of all it starts right on the doorstep of Villa del Sella. No previous experience is needed: it's one of the most accessible and fun adventure activities in Asturias.

A route for everyone

The classic stretch runs over calm waters, with the odd small rapid that adds a thrill without any real risk. The local operators provide the kayak, life jacket, dry barrel and a short briefing before you set off. It takes three to four hours, stopping for lunch on one of the river beaches along the way. It's ideal for families with children, groups of friends or couples.

The International Descent festival

On the first weekend of August every year, Arriondas and Ribadesella throw themselves into the Fiesta de las Piraguas, the International Sella Descent, declared an event of International Tourist Interest. Thousands of paddlers, the riverside train, brass bands and a unique atmosphere take over the river. If your stay overlaps with those dates, it's an unforgettable spectacle.

How to organise it from Villa del Sella

Being in Arriondas, everything is within reach: most kayak operators are based just minutes from the house and pick you up at the end of the route in Ribadesella to bring you back to the start. We recommend booking ahead in high season and setting off in the morning, when the river is at its calmest.

The perfect Asturian day

Round off the day the proper way: with a glass of poured cider in Cangas de Onís or, better still, back in Villa del Sella's 700 m² garden, firing up the barbecue with views over the valley. After a day of paddling, there's no better reward.
