Lakes of Covadonga and the Sanctuary: the heart of the Picos de Europa

Lakes of Covadonga and the Sanctuary: the heart of the Picos de Europa

Just half an hour from Villa del Sella lies one of Spain's most famous landscapes: the Lakes of Covadonga, in the heart of the Picos de Europa National Park. Enol and Ercina, two glacial lakes ringed by high peaks and meadows where cattle and horses graze, are the picture everyone keeps of Asturias.

The Sanctuary of Covadonga

Before heading up to the lakes, a must-stop is the Sanctuary of Covadonga, the symbolic birthplace of the Reconquista. The Holy Cave with its statue of the Virgin, the waterfall and the imposing pink-stone Basilica of Santa María la Real make up an ensemble that deserves an unhurried visit. It's one of the most visited spots in northern Spain.

Getting up to the lakes

During the busiest months (Easter, summer and long weekends) car access to the lakes is restricted and you have to take a shuttle bus from Cangas de Onís or El Repelao. It's worth checking the transport plan before you go, and arriving early to enjoy the lakes with fewer people and, with luck, no fog.

Walks around the lakes

At the top you'll find the Lakes Route (PR-PNPE 2), an easy circular loop of about two hours linking Enol and Ercina and passing the old viewpoints and shepherds' huts. For keener hikers, more demanding routes set off from here towards Vega de Ario or the Vegarredonda refuge, with spectacular views of the Cornión massif.

A perfect day trip from Villa del Sella

The Covadonga + Lakes combination is ideal for a full day. Set off early from Arriondas, spend the morning at the sanctuary and the lakes, have lunch in Cangas de Onís and head back to the house for a relaxed afternoon by the fireplace or in the garden. Bring warm clothing: even in summer, at 1,100 metres the weather changes fast.
