Hiking in the Picos de Europa: the Cares Route and other gems

The Picos de Europa begin barely 20 minutes from Villa del Sella, and they're a paradise for anyone who loves walking. There are routes for every level, from gentle family strolls to high-mountain crossings, but if you can only do one, make it the Cares Route.

The Cares Route, the "divine gorge"

It's 12 kilometres (24 there and back) carved into the rock, following the Cares river gorge between Poncebos (Asturias) and Caín (León). The path, cut into the cliffside above the canyon, delivers dizzying views, suspension bridges and tunnels. It has no big climbs, but its length calls for decent fitness and proper footwear. It's a little over an hour's drive from the house.

Gentler routes

If you're travelling with children or prefer something easier, there are wonderful options: the Lakes Route at Covadonga, the path to the Pozo del Alemán near Poncebos, or the walks through the meadows and woods around Arriondas. The Cangas–Covadonga along the Ríu Güeña path is also great for cycling or a family walk.

When to go and what to bring

The best season runs from May to October. Bring water, food, warm layers and sun protection; mountain weather changes quickly. Set off early to avoid the heat and the crowds, especially on the Cares in midsummer.

Your base camp

Villa del Sella is the perfect base camp for several days in the mountains: you come back from the trail, take a hot shower with the underfloor heating on, and rest your legs in the garden or by the fireplace. The next day, another route and another mountain a stone's throw from home.
